The Life Cycle of Butterflies

Published by at 6:30 pm under Butterfly Information

The life cycle of a butterfly is such a wondrous thing. It begins with an adult female butterfly that searches for the right host plant. Then she will lay either one egg or a cluster of eggs on the host plant.

The eggs will hatch into a small caterpillars, which will feed on the host plant. The small caterpillars will molt or grow out of their skin several times. Once they have grown as much as they need, the caterpillars will create either a chrysalis or cocoon in which they change .

Once the correct time has passed, an adult butterfly will emerge from the chrysalis or cocoon. The newly hatched butterfly will then unfold it’s wings and fly away to begin the life cycle all over again. It is such an amazing thing to me!
