A Butterfly Garden

Published by at 6:39 am under Butterfly Gardens

I love my butterfly garden, it is such a special place for me in the summer. I have been growing mine for years and I have learned a few things about butterfly gardens. I feel that all butterfly gardens should have the following traits.

The most successful butterfly gardens should always be placed in full sun, and sheltered from any strong winds that might blow. Butterflies cannot regulate their body temperature and so they need a warm location. They are also very fragile, their wings cannot withstand any strong winds.

There should also be plenty of butterfly flowers in the butterfly gardens that attract butterflies with their nectar, there are many different kinds of flowers that will do this. Butterflies will always congregate in large numbers wherever there are plenty of the flowers that they use for food.

Butterfly gardens should also always have plenty of the plants that butterflies use to lay their eggs on, also known as host plants. Butterflies are driven to reproduce, so if you have the different plants that they use to lay their eggs on in your butterfly garden, then you will attract a variety of butterflies to your garden.

Most butterfly gardens should have a small area of damp soil or a permanent mud puddle so that the butterflies can get the moisture and minerals they need to survive. These are easy to install and maintain, and will really add a cool dimension to your butterfly garden

All butterfly gardens must be pesticide free, pesticides will kill butterflies and their caterpillars just as quick as it will kill Japanese beetles, or other garden pests. If you keep your garden healthy, you won’t have any need of pesticides. It is a shame to attract butterflies to your garden, only to kill them by using pesticides.

Whenever you are watering your butterfly gardens, don’t use sprinklers to do it. It may harm the butterflies if their wings to get wet. It is much better to use soaker hoses or install drip irrigation in your butterfly garden.

Butterfly gardens are a beautiful way to attract the winged wonders into your life. They will bring you hours of enjoyment as they flutter around your butterfly garden on a warm summer afternoon. Butterfly gardens are easy to install in your landscape; and while they do take some time to maintain, the pleasure they will bring are well worth it.
