Cosmos makes a great addition to your butterfly garden

Cosmos is a common butterfly garden plant. It is native to South and Central America. It is an annual flower, which means that the Cosmos only lasts for one summer. It is really easy to grow and will bloom all summer long. It is a fast growing plant that can get up to 4 or 5 feet. Because of it’s height, Cosmos should be planted towards the back of the butterfly garden.

Cosmos flowers come in a variety of colors, white, pink, purple, yellow, and orange. The flowers can have single or double daisy like blooms depending on the variety you choose. Cosmos is very easy to start from seeds which makes them a great flower for inexperienced gardeners to grow.

Cosmos prefers full sun to partial shade and can take dry soil conditions. It can grow in poor soil or good garden soil. It doesn’t need a lot of care. You can fertilize it once or twice a season.

Cosmos is easily propagated from seed. You can plant the seeds directly into the butterfly garden. You need to plant them 12 inches apart and once they come up they need to thin them out to 18 inches apart. You can collect the seeds from the flowers in late summer and replant them each spring.

Cosmos is not usually bothered by insects or diseases. If any problems do occur, try not to use pesticides because they are harmful to butterflies.

If you are looking for an easy to grow type of flower for your butterfly garden, you may want to give Cosmos a try. Butterflies really like it, and it doesn’t need a lot of attention to put on a great show.
