Garden Plants
Garden plants growing in your yard is a great pastime, and it adds a lot of value to your property. It is not hard to do, and having garden plants will increase the enjoyment you feel when you get to spend time outdoors.
Garden plants need full sun to grow and flower their best. What “full sun” means, is that they need from 6 to 8 hours of full sunlight shining on them during the day to grow properly. If a garden plant doesn’t get enough sunlight it will be spindly and weak.
If you don’t have that much sun in your yard; your garden plants may not grow as well, and may not produce as many flowers. You can still grow some garden plants, that is just their preference. There are also many varieties of garden plants that will grow and they actually do better in the shade, like Impatiens and Hosta.
Garden plants need good soil to grow in. If you have soil that is too dry or too hard this will cause your garden plants to fail also. Always try to work some organic material into your soil before placing garden plants in your yard. By organic material, I mean cow manure and peat moss. These will do great things for your garden plants if you add it to the soil as you are preparing a new bed. It is also a good idea to work some organic materials into the soil each spring.
Weeds should not be allowed to grow around your garden plants. Weeds not only make your garden plants look bad, they can rob your garden plants of the nutrients that they need. Weeds will also attract pests, and will eventually choke out your garden plants if not taken care of properly. If you pull weeds out regularly, you will soon find that not as many weeds grow back. Eventually, they will not grow back at all, or at least only one or two. It can be hard work when the temperatures climb, I try to do my weeding in the early part of the day while it is cooler.
Garden plants come in all shapes and sizes, there are even garden plants that will grow and bloom all summer long, like Marigolds and Zinnias! All you have to do is create a space to put them in the garden. Plants in the yard add such a nice touch to everything. I hope you can find the time for growing some garden plants in your yard this summer.
